The Human Microbiome

"Probiotics" definition by WHO (World Health Organization):  "Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amount confer a health benefit on the host."

Historically, different cultures around the world have used fermented foods to their diet, full of probiotic critters, to help fight off  "bad" bacteria.  You can buy probiotics in capsule form, or munch on fermented foods! (may sound gnarly but is yummy and good for you ;)

Where can you find these beneficial critters?

Yogurt, Saurkraut, Kombucha, Miso, Kimchi and Kefir!

Harvard's Family Health Guide explains that probiotics may be helpful for: Allergies, Diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Urinary Tract Infections, Yeast Infections, Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), etc

What can throw our gut probiotics out of whack? All sorts of things including antibiotics, spermicides, stress and birth control pills.

Here is another NPR article about colicky babies and probiotics.
